As requested, here is a list of tips regarding Gospel Songwriting. I am only writing from experience and am still learning many things, but I deemed it charitable for me to share what I know to all potential Gospel Musicians out there.
Here it goes...
1. Don't be afraid to START. Most of the time, we tend to fail in doing something because we are afraid to begin doing anything in the first place.
2. Everything starts with prayer. Prayer is nothing else but a conversation with God. People who talk to God produce beautiful poetic masterpieces. Need an example? Look at the psalms! Be it a melody, a chord progression a poem or a set of words, all poetic inspiration for religious songwriting comes from prayer.
3. Writing simple mantras or repetitive refrains at the beginning of your feat helps a lot. This familiarizes you with the skill of expressing your Love for God with music. Begin not with creating full-choral masterpieces but with simple songs that are easy to play, sing and teach.
4. A Gospel songwriter who aims to evangelize through his music needs to have these simple songs in hand wherever he goes. Teaching a simple song to some of your friends or any other group you may meet will help them get to know you and your skill better. Should the time come that you are very well-skilled in Gospel Songwriting, teaching people your earliest simple works will get them acquainted with you and your style and this will make it easier for them to be interested with your music. This may compel them to ask you to teach them more songs, or even become your follower.
5. Work hard for it. The skill of Gospel Songwriting doesn't come to anyone overnight.
6. Bear in mind that music, especially songs about and for God, need to be life-giving. If your project begins to stress you out, make you more self-oriented than God-oriented, or even make you miss your own personal prayer times, I urge you to STOP. Leave your music project alone for at least a week, then start again afresh. Your music must bring you closer to God, not farther away from Him.
7. Be romantic! Regard God as the only love your life and write songs for Him.
8. Most important of all.. ENJOY!
I have lots to say regarding each of these points but I did my best to write them as brief as possible. Should you have any questions, be not afraid to send me a message through the Contact menu. Live and love life to the full!
Yours in Christ,
Adamus
